Coronavirus: US expert warns lifting lockdown early could cost many lives- BBC News

The leading expert on infectious diseases in the United States, who is a key member of the White House coronavirus taskforce, has warned that lifting restrictions too soon could lead to an uncontrollable spike in cases.

Anthony Fauci’s message is at odds with that of President Trump, who is determined to get the economy going again.

Meanwhile China’s government is claiming its handling of the pandemic as a triumph, despite some international criticism. There have been no recorded deaths from the virus in China for more than two weeks and official infection rates have fallen dramatically.

Protective measures remain in place and a few new cases in Wuhan has led to the testing of the entire city’s 11 million residents. .
